Dutch municipalities; It has been made continuously responsible for all welfare, support, and care for all citizens, including children, young people, and families in need. This is a great opportunity to translate policies and services into integrated approaches. Decentralization is high on the agenda and is constantly monitored to see how the system is working to benefit all children and young people in the Netherlands.
After the introduction of the new Child and Youth Act (2015), all 393 Dutch municipalities were made responsible for all care for children, young people, and families in need of support and assistance. Smaller municipalities merged to better perform their new duties. In 2019, the number of municipalities in the Netherlands fell to 355. The Child and Youth Act address preventive and special care needs.
