As young peer trainers of Y-PEER Turkey, which has been working since 2004, we decided to establish an association in order to institutionalize our work and increase our awareness. Although the bureaucratic burden of becoming an association forced us, we completed the process and established the Young Approaches in Health Association. We continued our work online from different cities until we held our first office in Ankara in 2017. As we continued the project and increased our field experience, we realized that young people are not a single homogeneous group. We started to write new projects and create new collaborations with different target groups, from youth groups with different needs to health service providers. Over time, we have grown into a large community that includes many young rights defenders, we learned from each other and became stronger together.
Young people have common experiences just because they are young. However, we are also aware that different youth groups have their own specific needs. We feel that some youth groups are marginalized and their voices are not being heard enough. We work to advocate for rights and be inclusive without leaving a single young person behind. Our main advocacy area is sexual rights. Sexual rights cover many things, from individual experiences to service delivery in the public sphere. We are sexual rights; The ability to easily access preventive and, when needed, test and treatment-related services and policies in order to protect individuals from sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancy and violence, including areas of freedom such as satisfaction in their sexual life, having an equal relationship and having a safe sexual life. We define them as rights based on non-discrimination based on age, gender, sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Sexual rights are human rights. Therefore, it cannot be compared with other rights and cannot be thrown into the background. It is not possible to talk about the existence of human rights without sexual rights being accessible to all people. That's why we work and will continue to work for a world where all young people have access to sexual rights, so that not a single person is left behind.
